My Redeemer Lives

My relatives stay far away,
And my friends have turned against me.
My family is gone, and my close friends have forgotten me.
My servants and maids consider me a stranger.
I am like a foreigner to them.
When I call my servant, he doesn't come;
I have to plead with him!
My breath is repulsive to my wife.
I am rejected by my own family. . .
My close friends detest me.
Those I loved have turned against me. . .
But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives,
And He will stand upon the earth at last.
And after my body has decayed,
Yet in my body, I will see God!
I will see Him for myself.
Yes, I will see Him with my own eyes.
I am overwhelmed at the thought! Job 19:13-27

This is one of the most profound professions of faith in all of Scripture.
Here is a man, Job, who had completely lost everything. Even his dignity was being trampled upon by his servants! His servants no longer responded when he called them. His friends turned against him; his breath was repulsive to his wife who thought it was better for him to die; and his family had rejected him. Job, the once renowned and respected man, had become a byword in society. He felt God had turned His back against him and allowed his enemies to make a mockery of him.

But amidst all his pain and grief, there is a resurgence of hope for the future!
Job declares confidently that he knows that his Redeemer lives and that even after his body was decayed, he would see God with his own eyes. The thought of seeing his Redeemer overwhelmed him! In ancient Israel, a redeemer was responsible for buying back a relative who had been sold into slavery or taking care of a helpless widow who was a family member. The redeemer brought a new lease on life to the person redeemed.

That was the hope Job was expressing. Somehow, even though he was struggling with the role of God in his sufferings, he suddenly had a burst of faith and hope that God would redeem him out of his situation.

Your situation might be dire with no solution in sight. You might feel as if God has turned His back on you. Your family might be shattered; your job or business might be gone; your health might be in crisis; your dreams, goals, and desires might be unfulfilled; and your friends might have walked away from you. But don't give up! Look ahead with confidence. Your Redeemer lives. All is not lost. Brace yourself because God has His eyes on you. He will not allow you to be tempted beyond your endurance. Job knew that his redeemer was alive and that he would see Him with his own eyes. Your Redeemer is alive too. He will reveal Himself in your situation!
Stand still, you will see His deliverance.

Prayer: I know that my Redeemer lives. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
