The Enemy Will Surely Come To Ruin

Afterward Mordecai returned to the king's gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief, and told Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him.
His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, "Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him -- you will surely come to ruin!" While they were still talking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman away to the banquet Esther had prepared.    Esther 6:12-14.
"Since Mordecai before whom your downfall has started is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him -- you will surely come to ruin!"

The Jewish people had enjoyed incredible success and divine protection ever since God moved them out of Egypt into the Promised Land. Their success in taking the city of Jericho and the various feats of accomplishments under such renowned kings as David and Solomon had caused fear to fall on the surrounding nations at various times in their history. Even in their sin and rebellion when God had righteously brought judgment upon them by allowing their enemies to capture and destroy their cities, they were still the apple of God's eye. God never abandoned them. The eye of God was jealousy upon them even when they were in exile.

Haman's animosity against Mordecai was primarily because Mordecai was Jewish. This hatred dated back to generations of animosity between Haman's ancestral lineage as an Amalekite who had hated the Jews for centuries. Haman's words were clear: "I am the only person the queen invited to the banquet she gave . . .  But all this gives me no satisfaction as long as I see that Jew Mordecai sitting at the king's gate." The hatred was simply vicious because Mordecai was Jewish. Haman was determined to deal a death blow not just to Mordecai but to the entire Jewish people.

What Haman did not take into account was that the God of the Jews could not be contended with! He had no idea that fighting Mordecai was tantamount to fighting the Almighty God Himself. His wife and advisers knew something he probably refused to consider in his power-drunken stupor: "Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him -- you will surely come to ruin." The writing on the wall was clear; Haman was fighting a losing battle. He was losing precisely because Mordecai was Jewish! He was fighting the power behind Mordecai's Jewish origin -- God!

As a child of God, it is important to know who you are and whose you are when you come under the attack of the enemy. God has promised very clearly in Exodus 23:22 that if we walk with Him obediently, "I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you." We also have this assurance in Romans 8:31, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" So, don't be frightened when you walk through "the valley of the shadow of enemies." Be confident that the enemy will surely come to ruin. Believe and act upon God's word!

Prayer: Father, I thank you for your unfailing divine protection. Amen!
