The Amazing Power Of God
Elisha died and was buried. Now Moabite raiders used to enter the country every spring. Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man's body into Elisha's tomb. When the body touched Elisha's bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet. 2 Kings 13:20-21
This passage is the last reference to the prophet Elisha in the old testament. Needless to say, it is a rather dramatic demonstration of the amazing power of the God of Elisha. Elisha was used by God to perform many miracles. He caused the death-producing city water to become life-giving. He prophesied and the barren became fruitful. He raised the dead back to life. He was so in tune with God that he was given revelations about the troop movement of the enemies of Israel. Even on his sick deathbed, God used him to prophesy the victory that awaited Israel over their enemies.
The power of God that was upon Elisha was simply indescribable. It can only be seen as an answer to the deep craving Elisha had to be used by God. Elisha tenaciously stuck with Elijah on the day God was about to take his master Elijah to heaven. Elisha's only request was to receive a double portion of the anointing that was upon Elijah. Elijah responded that Elisha had asked for a hard thing. But he assured him that he would receive his heart's desire if he saw Elijah at the moment when he was whisked up into heaven. Elisha was focused. He did not miss the moment and God blessed his life with incredible power to advance His Kingdom agenda.
The power of God upon Elisha was so strong that even his dead bones raised a dead person back to life! Question: What can we make of this? We know God is capable of anything. God is still working many miracles around the world. He can do all things. But what is there to learn from this rather strange display of divine power?
I believe this story of life being produced, even out of an anointed servant's dead bones, should remind us that the power of God is amazing and limitless! You never know when God will give you a surprise demonstration of His power. You never know when and how God can deliver a miracle to you. We must stand in awe of God. We must never limit our God. We must always crave for his Presence. We must seek Him, walk with Him faithfully, and expect that His grace and power will always be there with us even in the most unexpected situations. The power of God is simply boundless. It can reside in dead bones and give life even to the dead!
