Why Me, God?

Terrors overwhelm me; my dignity is driven away as by the wind,  My safety vanishes like a cloud. And now my life ebbs away; days of suffering grip me…
I cry out to you, God, but you do not answer; I stand up but you merely look at me.
You turn on me ruthlessly; with the might of your hand you attack me...
I know you will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for all the living…
Have I not wept for those in trouble? Has not my soul grieved for the poor?
Yet when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, then came darkness.
The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me...
My skin grows black and peels; my body burns with fever.
My lyre is turned to mourning, and my pipe to the sound of wailing.  (Job 30:15-31).

Job was very perplexed by his painful plight. He felt unsafe. He felt as if his life was ebbing away with every passing day. To make matters worse, Job felt as if God was totally silent toward him: "I cry to you, God, but you do not answer me." Job kept reminding God of all the righteous deeds he had done for the poor and needy. Now, he felt abandoned by God. Instead of the good, he was hoping for, evil seemed to be his reward. His life had been reduced to mourning and wailing. Why me, God?

The truth is: There are times when the circumstances of life overwhelm us. We feel as if God has abandoned us. We seem to be reaping only evil instead of all the good deeds we have sown in the past. In the words of Job, "The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me…" Our stomach churns with fear because the future seems so bleak and hopeless.
Job had no idea that God had not abandoned him. He had no idea that he was being attacked by the enemy with permission from God. He was not aware of the restoration and multiplication that God had in store for him. Job had no idea that he was not going to die, but live to declare the goodness of God!

Just like Job, there are times when our lives are gripped by fear. Our stomach churns with fear because trouble overwhelms us. We feel that God has abandoned us. But unlike Job, you and I know the end of the story. We know that God has already won the battle for us. We know that God will never leave nor forsake us. We know He did not forsake Job and will not forsake us. So, in those moments when we cry out, "Why me, God?"; let's remember that God is right there with us. He is still upholding us with His righteous right hand.

Prayer: Lord, there are times when I feel so overwhelmed that it seems as if you have forsaken me. But in those moments, please help me to rekindle my faith in you and to believe your promise that you will never leave nor forsake me. Thank you, Lord. I ask this in the matchless name of my Lord Jesus. Amen.
