Are You a Promise Keeper?

“LORD Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but  give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head....After the boy was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was...and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh...they brought the boy to Eli, and she said to him, “Pardon me, my Lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD. I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him. So I now give him to the LORD. For his whole life, he will be given over to the LORD.” And he worshiped the LORD there. I Samuel 1:11; 24-28

God is a Promise Keeper, but are you? God remembers our requests and He answers them; but do we remember our promises to God?
Hannah was desperate for a child and she made a vow to give her son back to divine service; if God so blessed her. God remembered the cry of Hannah and blessed her with a son. Hannah kept her promise and gave Samuel to God as a servant at God’s temple. Hannah did not make an idol out of her son. She recognised that Samuel was a gift from God and gave him back to God.

Oftentimes, we make promises to God in our times of desperate need but quickly forget to fulfill those promises when God answers our prayers. There have been times when I have suddenly remembered an unfulfilled promise to God and have made it a point to make good on it. God is a Promise-Keeper and we must fulfill our word to Him. I have seen situations where people have asked for the blessing of children and turned those children into idols right in the house of God! I have seen situations where people have made financial promises to God only to completely ignore those promises after God has blessed them! Sometimes, we solemnly promise to keep bodies pure only to fall into sin time and again. And suddenly, the promise we made to God is no longer a big deal.

God is gracious and merciful. He certainly understands our humanity. But He is also holy and righteous. So, does our holy and righteous God deserve the fulfillment of promises we make to Him? Yes, He definitely does! God remembers His word and fulfills them in our lives. Let’s remember our promises to God and fulfill them. So, are you a Promise-keeper?

Prayer: Father, I confess that there are times when I have not kept my promises to you or others. As your child, help me to reflect your character and nature. You are a Promise-Keeper so, help me to keep my promises. I want to be a promise-keeper. Amen.
