May God Grant You An Advocate

Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David and warned him, “My father is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there. I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak to him about you and will tell you what I find out.”
Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly. He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The LORD won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man . . . ?”
Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: “As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death.”
So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before. I Samuel 19:1-7

So much goes on behind the scenes which we are not privy to in both the spiritual and physical realm. Job, for instance, was innocently going on about his business on earth with absolutely no clue that Satan was seeking to destroy his life. But the Almighty God Himself became Job’s advocate against Satan. Things in the spirit realm are parallelled on earth.
Here was David, serving Saul the best he could, but Saul was out to destroy his life because he was jealous of him. But God gave David an advocate in the person of Jonathan, the king’s son. Jonathan had a covenant of mutual love and protection with David and so he warned David and advocated for him before his father. He spoke well of David to Saul and reminded him of how valuable David had been to the nation. So Saul relented and took an oath that David would not be put to death. David was restored to serve in the household of Saul again.
The truth is: so much goes on behind the scenes in life. You might be innocently serving the best way you could on the job with no clue that there is a “Saul” who is out to destroy your life and career behind the scenes. The “Sauls” in our lives look for opportunities to “kill” us in spite of the fact that they have benefited greatly from our kindness and services. They overlook everything we have done for them because they are enraged by our success and abilities.
Unfortunately, that is the reality of life. The people you slave for the most can become your most ardent critics and supplanters. That is what David experienced at the hand of Saul. But God gave him an advocate in the person of Jonathan, Saul’s own son!
May the Almighty God always give you an advocate who will speak on your behalf. May God give you a “Jonathan” who will stand up for you and remind “Saul” of your value. May the “Sauls” who rise up against you repent of whatever evil plans they have against you. May God bring all those plans to light and nullify them so that you can continue to strive and prosper for His glory. God did that for David. May He do that for you as well. God will grant you an advocate! There is a “Jonathan” for you!

Prayer: Father, behind the scenes of life, are all kinds of treachery aimed at destroying your children. But I am confident that you will always give me an advocate to speak on my behalf. Thank you, Father. There is a “Jonathan” for me. Amen.
