Cry Out to God Against the Wicked

In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,
Who are caught in the schemes he devises...
Arise, O LORD! Lift up your hand, O God.
Do not forget the helpless.
Why does the wicked man revile God?
Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account”?
But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted;
You consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;
You are the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked man;
Call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out.
Psalm 10:2-15, NIV

The wicked in society care about no one but themselves. They are greedy, self-centered, and have no fear of God. Oftentimes, especially when they have power and wealth, they operate as if they are above the law. In their greedy quest for more power and wealth, they trample down mercilessly on the poor and underprivileged. Sometimes they can remain untouchable for a long time. We see this time and again in society.

The Psalmist reminds us about the need to pray against the wicked. He calls upon God to consider the plight of the afflicted and break the arm of the wicked. Breaking the arm of the wicked simply means making it impossible for the wicked to function.  I think this is a very important prayer.  Too often, we watch as the wicked function with impunity whilst society suffers. There seems to be no voice to advocate for the helpless. But the Psalmist reminds us that God is the helper of the fatherless. Prayer is a powerful way to advocate for the wicked against the poor.

As we come before the throne of God, let us remember to pray that God will hold the wicked accountable and render them ineffective.  We must cry out to God against the wicked because their actions are detrimental to society as a whole.

Prayer: Father, everything is an open book before you. You are just and fair in all your ways. Rise up and advocate for the poor. Cripple the activities of the wicked against the poor and render them ineffective. Amen.
