Don't Let God Speak To Us

When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die."
Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."
. . . Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites this: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven . . .  Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you . . .' "
Exodus 20:18-24

When God gave the Ten Commandments to the Israelites, He spoke to the entire community to the hearing of all. The Israelites did not really want to hear the word of God directly. They were more comfortable listening to God through Moses.
It is interesting, however, that God said, "Tell the Israelites this: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven. . . ' "
It was almost as if God ignored their objection and went on record to establish indisputably, "I have spoken to you from heaven."

One of our major problems in our relationship with God is that we do not want to be held directly accountable by God. We do not want God to invade our space and deal directly with us. We are uncomfortable in the presence of the Holy God. We are more comfortable listening to what others tell us about God. Spending time to hear directly from God through His word is not that desirable.

It is great to have gifted pastors and teachers.
But the truth is: God desires to speak directly to us through His Spirit and His word.
Would you pause and hear God's voice today?

Prayer: Father, I long to hear your voice. Please help me to earnestly desire your word. Amen.
