Mere Mortals; But God Cares.

O LORD, our Lord, your majestic name fills all the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.
When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers -- the moon and stars you set in place -- what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?
Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.
You gave them charge over everything you made, putting all things under their authority . . .
O LORD, our Lord, your majestic name fills all the earth (Psalm 8 NLT).

This is one of the most sobering passages in Scripture concerning our "nonentity" in light of the vastness and profundity of God's universe. It is overwhelming to think of the breathtaking nature of God's creation -- the stars, the galaxies, the mountains and rivers, the oceans and all the numerous creatures that walk the earth and swim the depths of the oceans.

So in light of all the vastness of creation, why does the Almighty God who owns the universe even care about us "tiny" human beings? Why does He care about us, especially since our faithfulness to Him remains so questionable?

As the Psalmist ponders over this, he gives us the rather scary truth: We were made "only a little lower than God and crowned with glory and honor."  This is something we can never fully grasp with our humanity. As "punny" as we may be, God also gave us control over the entire creation. That is why we land on the moon, scale mountains, sleep in the beds of the oceans and keep lions and tigers as pets!

Think about it! God made us a little lower than Himself and put us in charge of all His creation because we were made in His image.
This humbling truth should cause us to cry out in worship, "O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your Name in all the earth." We are mere mortals but of inestimable value to our Creator.
We are so valuable to God that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die and reconcile us to Himself.
This should fill us with gratitude and worship! Mere mortals but God deeply cares about us!

Prayer: O LORD, my Lord, I declare and proclaim your majesty. I am grateful for your undeserving love for me. Help me to worship you with my whole life because you truly deserve my highest worship. Amen.
