Just Praise the LORD

I will praise the LORD at all times.
I will constantly speak His praises.
2 I will boast only in the LORD;
Let all who are helpless take heart.
3 Come, let us tell of the LORD’s greatness;
Let us exalt His name together.
4 I prayed to the LORD and He answered me.
He freed me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to Him for help will be radiant with joy;
No shadow of shame will darken their faces.
6 In my desperation, I prayed and the LORD listened;
He saved me from all my troubles.
7 For the angel of the LORD is a guard;
He surrounds and defends all who fear Him.
Psalm 34:1-7 NLT
David wrote this Psalm when his life had hit rock-bottom. This was at a time when he had escaped from King Saul who was desperately trying to kill him. Daivid took refuge in the territory of another king. He pretended to be insane, just so he could escape with his life from that king as well. It is interesting to note that this was against the backdrop of David having already been appointed by God and anointed to become the next king of Israel!

In spite of the challenges, David writes: “I will praise the LORD at all times.
I will constantly speak His praises.”

I want to invite you to ponder three statements David makes in this Psalm.

First: “I will boast only in the LORD.” David had already accomplished the enviable feat of killing Goliath at this point in his life. But he would only boast in the LORD, not his accomplishments! This is a reminder that no matter what our accomplishments might be, we should always remember to ascribe praise and boast only in the LORD who makes all things possible, never ourselves.

Second: “Let all who are helpless take heart.”
David saw the grace of God manifested in his life when he was totally helpless and on the run. God saved him from all his troubles. Do you feel helpless, take heart and call upon God.

Third: “I prayed to the LORD, and He answered me. He freed me from all my fears.”
Are you frightened by the situation you might be in today? The truth is, at one point or another, we each are faced with something fearful…sickness, difficult family situations, financial crisis, uncertainty about how things might turn out. Would you take a moment to pray and commit things to the God who does answer prayer?

Let me encourage you to do what David did…”Bless the LORD at all times.” Bless Him because the angel of the LORD surrounds and defends you at all times.

TODAY'S PRAYER
 LORD, help me to bless you at all times. Help me never to forget your goodness to me.
