May 16th,2018 || Scripture of the Day
The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: “When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a Sabbath to the LORD. For six years sow your fields and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. But in the seventh year, the land is to have a year of Sabbath rest, a Sabbath to the LORD. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards
…Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws …and you will eat your fill and live there in safety. You may ask, “What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?” I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years. While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in.
Leviticus 25:1-4; 18-22
Our existential needs and economic survival is one of the most passionate drives of human life. The age-old question of would I have food, clothing and shelter for tomorrow drives an understandable panic into our lives and pushes us to hold tightly unto every penny we make and forget about God’s promise that He will take care of our tomorrows. This is what makes it so difficult for many of us to give to God and follow His word concerning trusting Him with our resources.
The Israelites were no different. God asked them not to cultivate their fields in the seventh year as a form of offering to God. The natural question was: “What are we going to eat if we give the seventh year as an offering to you by not planting crops?” God’s answer was simple: “If you trust me enough to obey my word, I will bless you so much that one year’s crops will feed you for three years.”
Do you trust God enough to release to Him what His word commands us to give to Him financially? It can be frightening when you start out but God will bless you just as His word declares. God is a giver, not a taker. He only receives to multiply back to us many times over. Take God at His word and start blessing His Kingdom with your time, talents and treasures and watch Him surprise you pleasantly!
Prayer: Father, please help me to take you at your word. Help me to release and not hold back from you. I want to be generous in using my time, talents and treasures for your Kingdom. Thank you. In Jesus’ Mighty Name I pray. Amen.
